TBI-TURLEY WALLMAN SCHOLARSHIP

History and Background

The TBI - Turley Wallman Scholarship was established in 2001 by a group of Alumni from Tau Beta Iota Fraternity with the intention that a perpetual scholarship be available to the Brothers, and the sons of Brothers of TBI Fraternity.  This scholarship was also created for the purpose of recognizing the service and commitment of George H. Turley and Lawrence A. Wallman to TBI Fraternity and the institutions of higher learning now known as Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College.

George H. Turley (1902-1999) was a 1931 graduate of Fairmont State Teachers College; this was the first class to graduate after the institution’s name was officially changed from Fairmont State Normal School to a Teachers College.  Brother Turley joined the faculty of Fairmont State Teachers College in the Fall of 1940, and went on to serve as:  Professor of English and Speech, longtime Dean of Men; and Faculty Advisor of Tau Beta Iota Fraternity.  Brother Turley’s affiliation with Fairmont State spanned six decades; and his dedicated service to this institution was commemorated by naming the Turley Center in his honor.

Lawrence A. Wallman (1902-1980) graduated from West Virginia University and joined the faculty of Fairmont State Normal School in the Fall of 1929.  Brother Wallman went on to serve as:  Professor of Speech and Drama, Director of Theatre, and Faculty Advisor of Tau Beta Iota Fraternity.  Brother Wallman’s affiliation with Fairmont State spanned six decades as well, and his dedicated service to this institution was commemorated by the naming of Wallman Hall in his honor.

George Turley and Lawrence Wallman’s contributions to Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College thru its years as a Normal School, Teachers College, and State College alone warrant recognition.  However, their dedication as loyal Brothers of Tau Beta Iota Fraternity and their unselfish contributions as it’s Advisors spanned many years; and has left a lasting impact on the Fraternity that will echo for decades into the future. It is our humble intention that this scholarship may in some small way demonstrate the respect and gratitude held by the members of Tau Beta Iota for the tireless efforts of these dedicated Brothers.

The TBI - Turley Wallman Scholarship is an endowed scholarship, with funds administered by the Fairmont State Foundation, Inc.  The scholarship was funded by individual contributions freely given by numerous Brothers of Tau Beta Iota Fraternity. In 2006, the TBI Alumni Association assumed trusteeship of this scholarship program with the purpose of stewarding it in accordance with the purpose and intentions established by the scholarship’s founders.

In 2009, The TBI - Turley Wallman Scholarship was amended by the TBI Alumni Association to address the division of Fairmont State College into two separate institutions (Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College) and to expand eligibility to those enrolled in a Masters Degree program at Fairmont State University who otherwise meet the scholarships eligibility requirements.
